Decor of the Week: Mississippi Pine

Natural is in.

With the trend landscape dominated by a move further towards embracing the natural, Mississippi Pine comes to the fore as a planked timber, resembling a more natural wood effect than the blocked timbers we've loved in recent years.

The wooden heart finish on Mississippi Pine gives it a natural look and feel, but with all the benefits of laminate: affordability and ease of fit, cleaning and maintenance. In a mid-brown, this natural looking planked timber worktop lends itself perfectly to the Homely Hygge trend identified by our experts in the Wilsonart UK Trend Report for 2020. Heavily inspired by the Scandinavian term 'Hygge,' which means being cosy, comfortable and content, this trend reflects Danish and Norwegian interiors. They're driven by a calming combination of neutral shades, natural textures and fibres, modern shapes with clean lines, and vintage inspired accessories with clutter to a minimum.

In keeping with this clean, cosy feel for kitchen design in 2020, slab styles keep fuss at bay in neutral shades, although shakers could inject pale hints of colour you'd find in a Norwegian garden; muted yellow, dusky pink and sage green. For the walls, splashbacks keep it light and bright (the key to enduring long Scandinavian winters!). In our flat lay, we've used our acrylic Statement Splashback in Metro White, which looks like tiles but removes the time and cost associated with their fitting and maintenance. Pull it all together with vintage inspired accessories in metal tones for contrast against the wooden texture of Mississippi Pine.
